My cookie base is a soft, not-sweet-not-rich version of a butter cookie. I've never liked hard sugar cookies and I've never liked hard royal icing. Yes I have a sweet tooth, but I also don't like anything that tastes too sweet. My glaze icing is (in my opinion) a perfect blend of flavour and sweetness to compliment my plain cookie base. These cookies can be the perfect compliment to an afternoon tea, or a hefty dessert for the well-deserving.

Want to send a loved-one some Bling? My cookies travel extremely well and will arrive fresh and beautiful at their destination. (Shocker, I know, but I experimented with multiple shipments and I'm convinced it's the wax paper & tissue paper combination that saves the day.) Scroll through this page to get an idea of the different shapes I'm using and how I like to decorate and let me know if there is anything I can bake for you!

Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Marbled butter cookies, two sizes
These marbled butter cookies with modest buttercream decorations are the perfect cuties to serve your guests after a holiday season of larger meals and heavier desserts.

Marbled butter cookies, some of which have been iced
This platter gives you an idea of how the unfrosted marbled butter cookies look when served with frosted cookies. Having a variety of treats on your table increases the likelihood of pleasing everyone.
Butter cookies marbled with red food colouring

Marbled butter cookies

I wanted to experiment with adding food colouring to the cookie dough to marble the dough before cutting and baking the cookies. Wow! I really loved the effect. In this batch, I didn't work in the green enough so it came out rather dark. However, the red was amazing and the result was a very pretty, unique looking set of cookies that were very attractive on their own. So, when thinking of what to serve your guests, or what to take the host & hostess as a gift, think about including some un-iced marbled cookies for those who may wish to count their calories during the holiday season.

Christmas show at a local venue

The Mom told me her daughter loved the cookies and enjoyed bites of most of them before she started decorating. Look closely at the picture and you'll see the mitten has been sampled, the Christmas trees are missing their tops and the 2 ginger girls have sustained head injuries!

I've always been horrified at the terrible quality of the cookies in commercial decorating kits. However, they continue to line the shelves in the grocery stores, retail stores and bulk stores. To combat this travesty, I decided to put together my own decorating kit comprised of 18 gingerbread cookies, 1 pot of vanilla buttercream and 1 pot of 1/2 raisins, 1/2 chocolate chips. The cookies on their own are delicious. Let your children add a little buttercream if they like. You control how much sugar they consume.

Want to do your own decorating? The Bling Bakery Gingerbread Cookie Decorating Kit ($22) comes with 18 cookies, 1 pot of vanilla buttercream and 1 pot of raisins/chocolate chips. Have your own fun and explore your creative side!

I love love love my gingerbread cookie recipe and it's not because it took me 6 attempts to get it to my high standards. My recipe is packed full of ginger flavour AND is a soft, easy-to-eat-won't-break-your-teeth-no-need-to-dunk consistency. I like the messy hair (brings back memories) but it's a look that isn't popular with everyone....

Cat cookies
A member of our family adores cats, though I'm not too sure how he feels about sweets. Anyway, I'm sure my sister will help him finish these off. These cat cookies are a nice sized treat, measuring 3.5 inches tall and 3 inches wide when baked.
Tea on the deck at the cottage
Each summer Mom has our neighbour over for a visit to catch up on news from the past year. The weather was perfect for cookies and strawberries on the deck. The silver teapot didn't make it into the picture because I can't figure out how to photograph it without showing my reflection!
Planters & Hanging Baskets

Planters & Hanging Baskets
These planters and hanging baskets, done on a variety of cookie shapes, are not a lot of icing but certainly colour-up your summer afternoon snack table.
Small daisy, Mini Teapot
Small daisy (2"), Mini Teapot (1 1/2" x 2")
The small daisy is a very versatile cookie that looks great with a centre flower. For the teapots, I had the idea of doing tea cosies; these were dot cosies that took forever to do.
Small heart
Small heart (2 1/4" x 2 1/4")
I have a number of heart-shaped cutters, some not much larger than others. This design of covering the surface with petals is perfect for the smaller cookies, making them a real treat without being "too much" of a good thing.
Medium heart
Medium heart (2 3/4" x 2 3/4")
This heart shape is a slightly larger cookie, giving more space for centre flowers, or my other favourite, vines with blossoms.
Large heart
Large heart (3" x 3")
Part of an order, these large hearts with different borders made a nice sized cookie with not much icing for her guests who wanted cake as well as a cookie. This size is also perfect for floral bouquets (see below).
Tall Teapot & Mini Teapot
Tall Teapot (3 1/4" x 3 1/4), Mini Teapot (1 1/2" x 2")
Floral bouquets on the tall teapots with the mini teapots to fill spaces on the serving plate.
Large daisy (6 petal); Large daisy (10 petal); Tall Teapot

Small daisy with different blossoms

Large flan
Large flan (3")
Part of an order, these cookies were for 3 young children. The top ones are their names on a clothesline, the bottom ones are their names growing on top of flowers.
Large daisy with floral bouquet

Ice cream cone, 2 different cutters
Ice cream cone, top (3 1/2" x 2 1/4"), Ice cream cone, bottom (4 1/2" x 2 1/4")
By FAR my favourite decoration for the ice cream cones, these gems have melted chocolate for the base and vanilla buttercream swirls on top. They make a truly beautiful, special treat for the highly deserving. I use Merckens melting wafers (milk or dark chocolate), which are wonderful quality and have a delicious chocolate flavour.
Large flan Watering Can series
Watering can series on Large flan
These were, if I may say so myself, really REALLY cute cookies. Part of an order for a good friend who wanted something special FOR someone special, these had drops of 'water' on the petals and leaves to show the flow from the spout. Totally worth the time and effort.

Individually wrapped gift cookie
Gift wrapping
I use wax paper for wrapping cookies for mailing. It's environmentally responsible and the wax paper does a tremendous job protecting the cookies during shipping so (believe it or not) they arrive fresh and in perfect condition. Please have no qualms about sending an order of cookies as a gift! Go ahead! Bling someone!
Large hearts for Mother's Day

Easter Bunny & Easter Eggs
Easter Bunny (3" x 2 1/2"), Easter Egg (2 1/2" x 1 3/4")
I loved loved loved the little Easter baskets. Melted chocolate upper, woven base, nesting grass and eggs. These look a little plain compared to other orders I did but you get the idea. The Bunny is covered with petals and has a swirl tail, making them a nice Easter treat for the vegetarians out there.
Dot decorations

Ice cream cones (both sizes) with Cupcake cookie
Ice cream cones
I was experimenting with different decorating ideas for the ice cream cones and didn't think any of these were quite up to snuff. I want my Bling cookies to look like they've had some thought and work put into them, not just a swish of colour and a dash of icing like so many other cookies out there. (I guess for those bakeries that are doing 100s of cookies for the masses, they have to be quick and efficient whereas I've got time to dawdle and fuss....)
Ice cream cones (both sizes)

Squat Teapot, Mini Teapot, Mini Tea Cup
Squat Teapot (3 3/8" x 2 5/8"), Mini Teapot (1 1/2" x 2"), Mini Tea cup (1 1/2" x 1 1/8")
The squat teapot was the start of it all. I absolutely loved this cookie cutter, and with the vines and centre blossom as decorations, I was hooked on my new passion. The squat teapot makes a nice sized cookie - not too big and with a modest amount of icing, it's the perfect companion for your afternoon tea or coffee. The mini teapots and mini tea cups are bite-sized, meaning no crumbs and you can definitely eat them in quantity without the guilt.
Large daisy (6 petals), Large daisy (10 petals), Small daisy
Large flan, Small daisy, Apple

Large flan (3"), Small daisy (2"), Apple (2 1/2" x 2 1/8")
The sunflower design on the large flans makes a very impressive treat. The blossoms and leaves on the apple lets me indulge my favourite decorations on a new shape!

Cupcake cookie
Cupcake (3 1/2" x 3 1/2")
This makes a serious treat no matter how you slice it. It's a big cookie and I love doing the thatch base and swirl top, though obviously I'm open to your suggestions if you have this in mind for anyone inparticular.

Large daisy & Small daisy
Large daisy, 10 petals (3"), Small daisy (2")
The large daisy makes a really nice-sized cookie, and when it's not completely covered with icing it's the perfect compliment to your afternoon coffee or tea. A small splash of colour to your table, a combination of these two sizes makes a nice addition to your table.

Small daisy
Small daisy (2")
This is one of my favourite cookie shapes. It's not very big (so there isn't much waste if your guests don't like it) but it's not so big that you feel guilty eating more than one. There can be as much or as little icing as you like. Look for these in more photos to see how versatile these little daisies can be.

Ice cream Cone & Cupcake
Ice cream Cone (4" x 2 1/4"), Cupcake (3 1/2" x 3 1/2")
I have two ice cream cone cutters, the other is 1/2" shorter. Both make super cute cookies. The cupcake is my favourite and makes a truly decadent treat with the woven base and swirl top. I've also done these with a chocolate coating on the base with the swirl top - just amazing.

Cupcake & Ice cream cone
Cupcake (3 1/2" x 3 1/2"), Ice cream Cone (3 1/2" x 2 1/4")
This is the other ice cream cone shape, which is slightly wider than the one pictured above but 1/2 inch shorter. The cone decorations were preliminary when I was experimenting with different looks. They made it to the finals but didn't win!

Large daisy (6 petals), Large daisy (10 petals), Flan, Small daisy
Bling Bouquet
Large daisy, 6 petals (3 5/8")
Large daisy, 10 petals (3")
Large flan (3")
Small daisy (2")
Not everyone wants a large cookie with a ton of icing so I really like doing a variety of decorations for my customers. The sunflowers are a truly delicious treat and large enough to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. For the rest of your guests, the floral bouquets are the perfect choice for a satisfying cookie with a modest dose of sweetness.

  1. They all look so very intriguing. Cookies should be fun and these definitely fit the bill. I can't tell how delicious they are from the pictures but they sure look yummy.
